Bal Gangadhar Jambhekar, whose name graces our annual translation prize, was a wholly remarkable personality. Widely known as a pioneer of Marathi-language journalism, his biography opens a window into our beliefs as well. (In a couple of days, the English version should be up.)

बाळ गंगाधरशास्त्री जांभेकर यांचा जन्म १८१२ साली पोंभुर्ले, जिल्हा सिंधुदुर्गाच्या कोकणातील खेडेगावात झाला. वडिलांकडे घरीच बालपणी मराठी व संस्कृताचा अभ्यास.१८२५ मध्य़े मुंबईत आगमन.एज्युकेशन सोसायटीच्य़ा विद्यालयात पाच वर्षे अध्य़यन करून तो मुलगा इतका विद्वान बनला की विशीच्या आत प्राध्यापक म्हणून निय़ुक्ती  होण्याचा मान लाभलेला तो पहिला भारतीय ठरला.
